I love high school senior portrait sessions! Life is full of excitement for both our new seniors and families. And what better way to document and capture this time in your senior's life than with a portrait session just for them!
For Nate's senior session, he told me he wanted an urban feel to his portraits. Living near Belmont, NC, we thought downtown Belmont would be the perfect location. Belmont has a great urban vibe with still enough small-town charm and tons of hidden local spots for great portraits. When I arrived at Nate's senior session, I first took time to scout locations in the area that I thought would be best for his portraits. I focused on looking for areas with simple, clean backgrounds to keep Nate the focus of the images as well as locations that would create nice, framed compositions and interest. As a portrait photographer, I pride myself on creating portraits in any location while also using natural elements around the area to create interest and help enhance your portraits.
Because of Nate's ideas for his session, we kept outfit changes to a minimum. To fully embrace that urban vibe he was after, he kept his outfit simple with a cool pair of jeans and a white t-shirt.
When selecting outfits for any portrait session, I guide my clients on selecting outfits that both match their personality and the environment in which the portraits will be created. You are the star of your portrait and even though your outfit needs to be one that you feel confident in and love, it's most important that the focus is on you rather than your clothes. Because of this, we decided to keep Nate's outfit basic and focus more on posing in each of this portraits.
But just because the outfit may be basic doesn't mean that your portrait session has to be.
Nate drives race cars! So, without hesitation, I suggested that we include his own project car in his senior portraits.
We left downtown Belmont and drove to an open field right outside of town in order to have plenty of space for his car and to capture the stunning sunset in the background.
This is when my expertise with lighting in difficult situations took effect, as I not only lit Nate, but his car as well. All while keeping the background exposed correctly in order to show off the sun setting behind him. I knew that by adding lighting to this part of his session, I would be able to create portraits that would have a very dramatic and cinematic style to them.
As the evening came to a close, I know that out of all the images created that evening, not only would that portrait of Nate with his car be my favorite, but also Nate's favorite. These would be portraits that he and his family would look back on for years to come and remind them of his senior year and all his accomplishments.
