"Would you be willing to travel to Charleston with us for engagement photos?" This was the first thing that Elly asked me after booking Anna Danielle Photography for her upcoming wedding. "Yes, yes, yes, 1000% yes!" Why would I ever not want to travel to beautiful places and capture my client's love for each other in a place so special to them!? The thing I love more than capturing authentic love between my clients is being able to share in their experience in a place that means so much to them.
For Elly and Luke, this was Charleston.
As we started planning Elly and Luke's engagement session, I knew that we had to take full advantage of all Charleston had to offer. We planned a three day trip in order to give ourselves enough time to explore every bit of the city. We started researching the city and the most iconic historical sites to come up with places within the city that they were both drawn to visually. I also kept in mind places that the two of them had been together on past trips to Charleston and incorporated these places into our weekend.
Charleston is the perfect place for engagement photography because it also has a beach! Folly Beach is right outside of town and perfect for those dreamy sunset portraits we all love. We decided to take our first day in Charleston and create beautiful portraits on the beach, then use the second day for portraits through the historic district.
Beach portraits are not for the faint of heart. The beach is humid, crowded, and the wind is always blowing more than you would like.
We arrived at Folly Beach and the wind is blowing everyone's hair all over the place! It seems as though this may ruin the portrait session and Elly becomes concerned. After all, she spent time to style her hair and makeup. But the beach weather doesn't care! I assured her that the beach hair and wind just needs to be embraced and her portraits with Luke will look effortless and beautiful no matter the weather.
Not to pat myself on the back but... I think Elly and Luke's beach engagement portraits couldn't have been better! We created memories that will last a lifetime and created portraits that truly show their love for each other.
Our second day in Charleston was spent exploring the historic district.
We started by just wandering around through small alleyways between historic homes looking for any location that drew us in. My main focus was to capture Elly and Luke just enjoying the day and enjoying each others company.
I guided them through the town stopping along the way to capture portraits. Their first outfit for the day was a more formal attire look. Elly in a beautiful forest green satin dress and Luke in a white button up. I could not think of a better outfit to wear that complimented the elegance of Charleston and created show-stopping portraits.
Their second outfit choice was more casual, but still reflective of Charleston's charm. We went from historic buildings to garden squares filled with old trees, enjoying the day and moments along the way.
I could not have imagined a more deserving and wholesome couple to have spent my weekend with in Charleston capturing their forever love story.
As our weekend came to a close, it was hard to leave. There is so much potential in a city like Charleston, and we had only seen and experienced such a small part of it. But, that just leaves room for them to go back and explore more that Charleston has to offer on their next trip.
From the beach, old oak trees, historic alleyways, and boat docks, this is an engagement session I will never forget as a photographer! And I am so honored that Elly and Luke trusted me to tell their story.
