I know when I first heard that photographers were creating studio portraits, I imagined this drab old studio that looked like it came out of the 80’s with these silly old props that no one really wanted to use and bad photography backgrounds that looked so fake. Well, let me tell you, that is not the case at all! (and thank goodness it isn’t)
When choosing to photograph in the studio, we have more control over lighting, posing, props, and the overall outcome of the final image. Sometimes you may have an idea for this really funky session, and there is just no way that all those things can be recreated and controlled outdoors. That’s when the studio comes in. We can bring in water to make a fake pond, sticks, and other greenery to look like you are in a forest, and light your image with precision.
Your studio portrait experience can become whatever you want to make it. It doesn’t have to be something over the top. Sometimes the most powerful and emotional images are those that seem so simple and include only you in the photograph. This is the power of imagery and why I became a photographer. Each image should mean something special to you and help to tell your story and it is my honor to be a part of that journey and story.
So studio photography isn’t dead, and it’s not old and outdated. Studio photography can become whatever you want it to be!
