Family portrait sessions are some of the most important photographs a photographer can capture. Kids grow up too fast, families expand, family members move; we are all going 100 miles an hour in all directions. I photographed the West family in January and what an afternoon it was! It was cold and windy out, a true January weather day, but that did not stop this family from enjoying their time together, laughing, recreating old childhood photos and creating new ones too.
This was a larger family portrait session that took place at one of the families home. I love whenever my photography clients have a location suggestion for their session that is sentimental to them. The field beside the home was the perfect spot for the photos! With everyone gathered, we laughed our way through all the family combination portraits and with the addition of a few new kids to the family, created a few new photo group combinations as well.
I love the whole group family photograph. There are multiple generations of the West family represented in the image and how amazing it is to be able to see such a large and beautiful family gathered together for one occasion.
Although I will always love and stand behind the importance of the formal family photograph, I think my favorite images are the more behind the scenes type photos or those where everyone's personality shines. Cousins playing together, laughing with one another, or maybe it's the recreation of an old cousin's photo 15 years later.
No matter how big or small your family, don't forget the importance of documenting your family and loved ones. We are always changing and growing. The babies wont be babies forever, and not everyone will share the same house together forever. There is never a reason to not have a family portrait photography session.
